Bee Gees

.
I was saddened when I read that singer Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees was in a coma in Chelsea hospital in West London. Robin is the last surviving member of the legendary British singing group that performed for us for almost a half century. I think that most of us will remember the Bee Gees best for the soundtrack from the movie Stayin’ Alive. There was something magical about that movie that captivated most of us, not that we lived a life similar to the character that John Travolta played, but rather that we were moved by the music, and could identify with the longing of someone who wanted to excel at what he did. It is the end of a passing era in some ways, but in others the Disco Era will never end as long as we can hum along with the many great hits that were written during those years. I shall always remember Barry, Robin, and Maurice. Their music brought a lot of pleasure into our lives. Click on the title of this article to watch the YouTube video of the Bee Gees performing their hit song from Stayin' Alive.

I fell in love that year; the music was in tune with my heartbeat. That was the love of my life; there never was another. My soul stopped with disco and never moved on. I had big hair and lots of it and disco danced till I dropped. Scarey. I suddenly feel old - just for a moment. www.dkchristi.webs.com - author of Ghost Orchid - a love story in the aura of the rare and endangered ghost orchid, high in the Everglades canopy.

Thanks for taking time to remember and comment. It was a great era, and we are all better for having lived through one of the most exciting times of the last century.

Joe, that was a fun time in my life. Thanks for taking me back. So saddened about the Bee Gees. "Staying Alive" will live on - I believe CPR trainers now tell their students to cardio press to this tune.

It was a fun time for all of us who lived through it. It is interesting how many events use the theme from the Rocky movie. It is playing at the finish line at most national races.

Joe, thanks for taking me back to a delightful memory. I had not heard about Robin's illness and it reminded me of my own vulnerability. The Bee Gees' music will live on for many, many years.

Betty,

I suspect that wonderful memories are one of the major reasons we write. The Bee Gees were a great group. Their music will live on as long as their fans are alive.

The Bee Gees were an outstanding group and I loved their music. "Saturday Night Fever" was a brilliant film, but without that music I doubt it would have been nearly as successful.

Yes, and then we had the death of Davy Jones of The Monkees not that long ago too. Momento mori -- and also reminding us of a host of others who made the '60s and '70s a great time to be alive!

James,

There are many different groups that most of us have completely forgotten about. I sometimes go to YouTube and look through the list of songs by popular groups. It can bring back some wonderful memories. Whenever I write a story set in the recent past, I find several songs and listen to them as I plot. It will definitely get the juices flowing. Thanks for taking time to comment and share your thoughts with others.
